Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Accidental death and dismemberment coverage is designed to help in situations where a serious accident leads to death or major injury. If an accident leaves you partially blind, causes an amputation, or otherwise results in a covered loss, this type of policy or rider may provide a payout.

The dismemberment part of the coverage pays different amounts depending on the type and severity of the injury. In some cases, losing fingers, a hand, a foot, or another major body part may qualify for benefits. If the injury is not severe enough to meet the policy’s terms, then no payment would be made.

The accidental death portion works differently. If death is caused by a covered accident, the policy may pay out the full benefit amount, and in some cases it can pay double the face amount. This is often called double indemnity. It does not apply to death from natural causes or illness, only to covered accidents.

This kind of coverage is not something most people think about every day, but it can be worth understanding as part of a broader financial plan. No one expects to be injured in a serious accident, but knowing what protection is available can help you make better decisions.
