Disability
What would happen to you if you became disabled and could not work? That is not always an easy question to think about, but it is an important one. Disability can happen because of an illness, an accident, or another health issue that keeps you from earning a paycheck, even if it has nothing to do with your job.
Some people are fortunate enough to have short-term disability through work and then move into long-term disability if they are out for an extended period of time. In many cases, those benefits may replace about 60 to 70 percent of your base salary. That can help, but it usually does not replace your full income. If benefits run out and you are still unable to work, you may be left with no income from that source at all.
Other people may not have any disability coverage through work at all. In some cases, they may even lose their job while they are recovering. That is where disability insurance can make a real difference. It can help protect your income and give you some breathing room while you focus on getting better.
Disability insurance is often one of the most practical forms of protection because it helps guard the income you depend on every month. The cost is often quite reasonable compared to the financial risk of losing your paycheck. For many people, it is a valuable part of a strong financial plan.
